Career Orientation Day
The Career Orientation Day (COD) will take place November 13th 2024!
The COD is an event where students get an impression of what you can actually do after finishing your studies.
You can register here!
Various companies, academics and alumni from De Leidsche Flesch will come to this event to talk about career options in addition to their personal career. They can tell you what they did after achieving their bachelor and / or master degree and what opportunities are out there. In this way you get a varied view of your career after your studies.
You can attend any lecture without signing up. However, if you want to participate in two or more lectures, or if you want to attend the dinner, please sign up. If you or someone you know are not a member of De Leidsche Flesch, but wish to participate anyway, please send an email to extern@deleidscheflesch.nl. Participants get free dinner upon attending the majority of lectures!

Should you continue your career in academia or not? This is an important question that you've probably asked yourself as you begin to explore your career options. For those who haven't decided, this talk will explore what it means to pursue a PhD. If you've chosen academia as your path, I hope to offer some useful tips on the procedures and what you need to arrange to make it happen. For those who've decided to venture into the exciting world of industry, I'll share my experiences on the boundary between industry and university. I began my PhD in Leiden four years ago, focusing on the technical aspects of Earth Observation, and I'm now in the final stages. During my PhD journey, I spent a month working in-house at Cosine B.V. in Warmond and interacted with numerous industry partners at conferences, meetings, and workshops. This December, I'll be starting my next step as a postdoc in Barcelona. |

About myself: Mathematically born and raised in Leiden. Started in 1980 as a student, graduated cum laude in 1985, obtained a PhD in algebraic geometry in 1989 (On the Geometry of the Burkhardt Quartic), then worked until 2002 as a teacher at a high school and since 2002 until now partly working at Leiden University as a teacher and partly at the software company Zermelo as a developer. This is my 'career' in short. In my talk I will briefly discuss the mathematics I have been working on and especially how I, as a theoretical mathematician, have contributed to a software company that became a two-man company with my arrival in 2002 and is now the market leader in the Netherlands with 50 employees. |
